Five Things You Should Know When Starting a Business

The idea of starting your own business seems nice doesn't it? You don't have to work for someone else, you don't have to work when they need you to work, and you don't have to work for barely enough money to cover your bills. Everyone would love to set their own schedule and be in complete control over how much money they make. Starting a business is a great idea, as long as you plan it correctly.

1. How many hours a day are you willing to put into starting a business? Believe it or not most people who are self employed work a lot more than 40 hours per week. However, most will tell you that they are a lot more willing to put in 80 hours a week working for themselves because they are doing something they love to do. You need to take into consideration what type of hours will work with your family's schedule. Especially when you are just starting out plan to work more hours than normal.

Accountant

2. Do you have an accountant? Even small businesses need an accountant. You may not need an in house accountant, but you should have someone who can at least guide you financially. When you're starting a business there are a lot of "little" things that need to be done; it's good to have someone who can make sure all of the paperwork is in order.

3. Did you check the state requirements? Each state has different laws. You may need a vendor's license or numerous other licenses when starting a business. Each state has their own website, you should start there so you know what is required before you are up and running.

4. Do you have insurance? Before starting a business, you should always check into business insurance. This will not only protect any products or merchandise, but it will also protect you. When you are the owner of a company there is a lot more that you can be held liable for, you don't want to risk losing your business or even your home.

5. Do you love what you're doing? There isn't any point in going through all the hassle of starting a business if it's not something you really love to do. You are only setting yourself up for failure. Even if your business idea sounds good, don't jump right in. Take some time to think about it and make sure it's really what you want to do.

Starting a business takes determination and hard work, but at the same time it's very rewarding. Keeping yourself prepared for what's to come, puts you one step closer to success.
