The Miracle Locked In A Salary

I would like to start by saying that the aim of this column is to highlight readers on things that they have heard before with an intention of provoking them to think through and see things that they never saw. This is the reason my English is simple and I have avoided using economic jargon.

Today I will talk about the miracle that is locked in a salary. For the sake of the majority who have only one stream of income which is a salary, I will be using the term salary, but in the real sense I am referring to every kind of income that comes to you after providing a certain good or service to an individual or institution. This can be in the form of dividends, allowances, bonuses, famous BC's (university students), private jobs (my friend Daniel Libati calls them PJs), etc. May I also mention here that others own farms, shops, schools and different enterprises where they engage others to do the work while they are employed elsewhere.

I do not want to get in the nitty-gritty of managing a salary because of the nature of this platform but I will briefly share four keys that will unlock the miracle locked in every salary.

The Miracle Locked In A Salary

(i)The first key is Release.

A number of people call this all sorts of names; Christians call it tithe, my Muslim brothers call it alms giving, Atheists call it paying back good to nature, the corporate world calls it corporate responsibility, etc. It's in the nature of almost every human to assist those in need because it is believed that once you meet another persons needs, others will repay you with goodness.

I have chosen to call it release because it involves a release of a resource (financial or material) from one individual/institution to another. Over the years, I have come to believe that everyone who uses this key will always get a return after sometime. Why is it that for those who take alcohol, they always get free beers even if they go to a bar without having any money in their pockets? (I hope I have not raised dust on that one!), Why is it that orphans whose parents were known to take care of relatives always end up under other people's roofs without difficulty? Why is it that companies that are heavily involved in helping improve the lives of people in communities always attract more customers than their competitors? (an example is Zain Zambia). Why is it that countries who accommodate refugees always receive many donations from others? (Zambia is such a country). Why is it that after an individual is unfairly dumped by their girlfriend/boyfriend they always find someone who is at least ten times better than their previous partner?

I can go on and on but I have come to believe that there is a Supernatural power that favours individuals who use the key of release.

(ii)Second key is Saving.

For every amount of money that you earn, it is recommended that you set aside a certain percentage e.g. 10% and bank it in a savings account. This is the reason why we have savings accounts offered by banks. Many people don't have the discipline of saving because we always think that every money that comes our way should leave us in order to pave way for other monies to get to us.

The purpose of saving is to enable an individual/business accumulate a certain amount of money for a specific task which is usually big and cannot be done on one salary.

Friends, take a look at this; if brother X decides that he is going to work for a company for a period of 10 years before he starts his own business, and he decides to make 10% savings from his K3, 000, 000 salary. If he does this for the said period he will have a total of K36,000,000 in his account. Please note that we have not computed interest accumulated over the said period, and possible salary increments. Can I go further on and say that if brother X also did PJs and ran a grocery and earned K3,000,000 and K1,000,000 from the two ventures respectively every month, then after a period of 10 years he would have accumulated not less than K84,000,000 (again we have not considered interest and salary increments).

You can clearly see that brother X will have enough money from savings to take his child to university without a problem or even buy a decent car without getting a loan or touching his pension. That's the power of the second key!

(iii)Third key is Invest.
This key suggests that we pump cash into acquiring a performing asset or improve an existing line of business. Allow me to refer to brother X using this key. If he decides to set aside another 10% from his salary for investments then you will agree with me that over a period of 10 years he would have injected not less than K84,000,000 in his grocery and preferably buy a few shares on the stock exchange. If this is the case then, the grocery will have turned into a supermarket with a possibility of two other branches in other towns because not only will the growth be triggered by profits but the additional 10% pumped in on a monthly basis.

From this we can see that the avenues of income will be multiplying and he will be getting dividends from his shares. How better can that get?

(iv)Spending is the last key.

Now who said that a human being does not need good things such as clothes, cars, houses, holidays, good food, health, etc? We all need these things and usually those who say that they don't, end up pointing fingers of accusations at the ones who are enjoying! From the above keys you will see that brother X will have a total of 70% of his salary to spend while money will be steadily accumulating as he engages the above mentioned keys. It simply means spending wisely and with a peace of mind.

Let me conclude by saying that usually a lot of money passes through our hands but thieves namely; uncontrolled usage of talk time, expensive meals, excess girlfriends, keeping up appearances, unplanned loans, etc. make us struggle financially for the rest of our lives.

I have shared the keys with you, take a deep breath, look at your spending habits and make a vow to unlock that miracle!
